Title: Are you and your patients ready for the fight against the new epidemics: obesity and type 2

Language: English with Chinese PPT

Speaker: Dr. Zhitong Zhu MD, PhD (China)

Speaker Bio./Resume:

Dr. Zhitong (Isabel) Zhu is working at the St. Paul’s Hospital, Vancouver, Canada. Based on her clinical

experience, she has brought fruits into the fields of clinical trials, data management, and preclinical

research. In addition to a MHSc degree in Clinical Epidemiology from the University of British

Columbia, Dr. Zhu holds a MD, Master in Pharmacology, and a PhD degree in Pathogen Biology from

the Tianjin Medical University, China. She started to practice Internal Medicine and assisted clinical trials

in 1994. Over the years, she had been actively involved in new drug screening and action mechanism

studies, organized post-marketing surveillance and regulatory affairs projects, supervised marketing

authorization and registration. Recently, her research fields are more focused on designing, setting up,

managing, and analyzing longitudinal and clinical trial databases.

The past decade has witnessed a dramatic increase in both obesity and type 2 diabetes. The prevalence of

the two epidemics has posed a threat to the global public health systems. Once ‘a disease of affluence’,

type 2 diabetes has become increasingly prevalent among the poor. Once known as an adult-onset disease,

type 2 diabetes has changed to a disease of children and young adults. There are 285 million diabetes

patients worldwide, among which 2 million are Canadians. Overweight, especially obesity, is a primary

risk factor for type 2 diabetes. Strikingly, around a quarter of Canadians aged 15 years old or older

reported themselves as overweight, including obesity. In the face of the new epidemics, are you well

equipped to help your patients prevent or manage obesity and type 2 diabetes?

In this lecture, Dr. Zhu will share her unique perspectives and insights from her clinical practice and

research experience. You will get updated on the newest diabetes and obesity research in the fields of

epidemiology, biology, pathology, relationship between the two epidemics, diabetic complications,

prevention and clinical therapies. This lecture will benefit TCM practitioners by providing an overview of

cutting-edge diabetes research and therapeutic advancement, increasing health literacy, facilitating an

effective doctor-patient communication, and promote the effectiveness of the integration of TCM into

patients’ mainstream healthcare activities.
