Discover its many therapeutic approaches and explore how traditional knowledge continues to evolve through modern research, technology, and innovation. Together, let's honour TCM's heritage, celebrate its ongoing development, and embrace its possibilities for the future.

On October 24, 2026, ATCMA celebrates Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine Day, honouring a rich medical tradition that has supported health and well-being across generations and continues to evolve in today's world.

TCM represents centuries of observation, experience, accumulated knowledge, and clinical practice. Its holistic understanding of health, its diverse therapeutic approaches, and its emphasis on the relationship between the individual, lifestyle, and environment offer a distinctive perspective on health and healing.

But TCM is not simply a tradition preserved from the past. It is a living and developing field. Its approaches, understanding, tools, technology, and research have not stood still in time. Practitioners, educators, and researchers continue to build on traditional foundations, explore new possibilities, and advance the practice of TCM in a modern world.

This Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine Day, ATCMA invites the public to discover the breadth of Traditional Chinese Medicine, appreciate its many contributions to health and wellness, and explore how this evolving tradition continues to enrich the healthcare landscape.

What Is Traditional Chinese Medicine?

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is a medical system that began thousands of years ago and has continued to develop and evolve over the centuries.

At its heart is an understanding of health that considers the interconnectedness of the body, mind, lifestyle, and surrounding environment. Rather than viewing health as a collection of isolated symptoms, TCM seeks to understand patterns within the individual and the relationships that contribute to overall well-being.

Traditional concepts such as Qi, Yin, and Yang, and the Five Phases/Elements provide frameworks for understanding the body's functions, relationships, and changing states. These concepts have shaped generations of clinical observation and practice, contributing to TCM's distinctive approach to assessment and treatment.

An important feature of TCM is its emphasis on individualized care. Practitioners consider each person's circumstances, symptoms, constitution, and patterns of health when developing treatment strategies.

TCM also recognizes that supporting health involves more than treating illness. Diet, movement, rest, emotional well-being, and seasonal changes all have a place within its broader approach to maintaining balance and vitality.

Today, TCM is practised and studied in many parts of the world, bringing traditional knowledge into conversation with contemporary healthcare, education, and research.

A Diverse World of Therapeutic Approaches

One of the most remarkable aspects of TCM is the breadth of its therapeutic approaches. Each modality has its own history, principles, techniques, and place within traditional practice.

One of the most interesting aspects of TCM is its diversity.

Acupuncture involves the insertion of very fine needles at specific points on the body. Acupuncture is perhaps the most identifiable practice of TCM in the West, and it is commonly recognized for its ability to relieve pain, but it is also exceptional at calming the nervous system, supporting digestive health, improve sleep, and so much more.

Modern research has explored acupuncture's effects on pain, nausea, and other symptoms, helping expand our understanding of its clinical applications.

Chinese herbal medicine draws on a sophisticated tradition of identifying, combining, and preparing medicinal substances. Herbal formulas are selected specific to the individual, with attention to the properties of individual ingredients and how they work together within a formulation. This approach reflects generations of accumulated knowledge about medicinal substances and their applications. Herbal medicine formulas differ even when the symptoms are similar, as no two people are identical. The herbs treat the person, not the symptom, illness, disease, or condition.

Today, Chinese herbal medicine continues to develop through botanical identification, product quality testing, pharmacological investigation, and research into traditional formulations.

Tui na, a form of traditional Chinese therapeutic manual treatment, uses techniques such as pressing, kneading, and other hands-on methods. Its practice draws on traditional understanding of the body's channels, muscles, and functional relationships. Tui na may be incorporated into care for musculoskeletal discomfort, mobility concerns, and other conditions, depending on the individual's needs.

It demonstrates the breadth of TCM beyond needles and herbal preparations, highlighting the role of skilled manual techniques in traditional care.

Cupping uses suction to create a vacuum against the skin. Cupping is commonly explored for muscular discomfort and tension but may also be used in TCM to treat respiratory issues like colds and flu.

Its use has also attracted contemporary research examining its effects and potential applications, and many other healthcare practices have started to incorporate cupping therapy—calling it myofascial decompression, or some other similar biomedical name—into their practices.

Moxibustion involves applying heat generated by burning processed mugwort near or at acupuncture points or areas.

Heat has an important place in several traditional therapeutic approaches, and moxibustion reflects TCM's longstanding interest in the relationship between warmth, circulation, comfort, and patterns of health.

Tai chi and qi gong are mind-body practices that combine movement, posture, breathing, and focused attention. These practices offer accessible ways to explore mindful movement, balance, coordination, relaxation, and physical activity. Research has examined their potential contributions to mobility, balance, fall prevention, and quality of life.

TCM dietary therapy (also called food cures) recognizes the important relationship between food, daily habits, the seasons, and well-being. Traditional dietary approaches consider the properties of foods and how dietary choices may be adapted to individual needs and seasonal conditions.

This approach encourages people to think about food not simply as fuel, but as an integral part of everyday health.

This not a complete list of all the TCM therapies, but it includes the most common ones.

Each modality has its own history, techniques, and potential applications. Understanding this diversity helps us appreciate that TCM is not simply one treatment, but a broad collection of approaches to health and well-being.

Individualized Care: Understanding the Person, Not Just the Symptom

A defining feature of TCM is its emphasis on understanding each person as an individual.

Two people may experience similar symptoms but have different health histories, lifestyles, constitutions, and patterns according to traditional TCM theory. Their treatment approaches may therefore differ.

A TCM consultation may explore sleep, appetite, digestion, energy, temperature preferences, emotional well-being, and other aspects of daily life. Traditional assessment may also involve observing the tongue and feeling the pulse.

These observations help practitioners develop a pattern-based understanding within the TCM framework and guide the selection of appropriate therapeutic approaches.

This attention to individual circumstances is one of the distinguishing features of traditional Chinese medicine. It creates space for a detailed conversation about a person's experiences, health goals, and daily habits.

At its best, the process brings together careful listening, skilled assessment, thoughtful treatment planning, and an ongoing commitment to the person's well-being.

An Ancient Tradition in a Modern World

TCM has a long history, but its development has never stood still. Its approaches, understanding, tools, technology, and research continue to evolve. The knowledge passed down through generations provides a foundation on which contemporary practitioners, educators, and researchers continue to build.

Today, traditional practices are explored through new research methods, advances in clinical observation, improved analytical technologies, and a growing understanding of human physiology and health.

Acupuncture research, for example, continues to investigate its effects across different conditions and populations. Research into Chinese herbal medicine examines medicinal ingredients, traditional formulations, quality control, and potential applications. Studies of tai chi and qigong continue to explore their contributions to movement, balance, and well-being.

Technology is also opening new possibilities. Modern analytical tools can help identify and characterize the compounds found in medicinal plants. Digital education and clinical documentation support professional learning and communication. Advances in research design allow traditional practices to be investigated in increasingly sophisticated ways.

At the same time, contemporary TCM practice continues to develop through professional education, clinical experience, improved treatment techniques, expansion of therapies and tools, and the integration of relevant knowledge from anatomy, physiology, and other areas of healthcare.

This ongoing development is not a departure from tradition. It is part of the continuing story of a medical system that has adapted across generations.

Tradition provides a foundation. Clinical experience adds depth. Research opens new questions and possibilities. Technology offers new tools for understanding and application.

Together, these elements create opportunities to preserve valuable knowledge, strengthen professional practice, and explore how TCM can continue to contribute to health and well-being.

ATCMA's Commitment to the Future of TCM

Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine Day is an opportunity to recognize not only the history of Traditional Chinese Medicine, but also the people who continue to advance it.

Want Better Acupuncture Coverage? Your Patients Can Help Make the Case.

Many TCM and acupuncture professionals hear the same frustration from patients: “I wish my benefits covered more acupuncture treatments.”

For patients who use acupuncture regularly, limited extended health coverage can quickly be exhausted. This can make it harder for patients to continue the care they find helpful and may limit their ability to access treatment when they need it.

ATCMA continues to advocate for the TCM and acupuncture profession in British Columbia, but when it comes to the amount of acupuncture coverage included in an employee benefits plan, there is an important reason that patients and employees need to be part of the conversation.

What is Heat and Fire in Chinese Medicine

This article explores the concept of “heat” in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and its role in the disease process. Building on the previous discussion of dampness, it explains how heat—often comparable to inflammation in Western Medicine—is understood in TCM as both a chronic and acute condition, with important distinctions between “deficiency heat” and “excess heat.” The article examines how these patterns relate to immune function, infection, autoimmune conditions, and chronic illness, while highlighting the more individualized and dynamic approach TCM takes in understanding and treating inflammation-related conditions.
