You are invited to an engaging Clinical Round Table Discussion and Dinner:
Understanding Supplement Use Through a TCM Lens
Traditional Chinese Medicine is rooted in pattern differentiation rather than disease-based protocols. However, many patients arrive at our clinics already taking a variety of supplements.
This creates a clinical reality in which TCM practitioners must be familiar with common natural health products (NHPs), including their purposes, actions, and current trends in use. Understanding these products is essential when determining whether they support, duplicate, or potentially conflict with a TCM treatment strategy or prescribed herbal formula.
During this presentation, Dr. Melissa Carr will discuss supplements that TCM practitioners commonly encounter and may recommend in clinical practice. She will explore their uses and important considerations alongside TCM treatments.
Where possible, supplements will be examined from both biomedical and TCM perspectives, including their:
- Flavour
- Temperature
- Target organs
- Functions
This approach can help support safe, effective, and truly individualized patient care.

About the Speaker
Dr. Melissa Carr is a registered Doctor of Traditional Chinese Medicine and has been practising since 2001. She holds a degree in kinesiology and worked in medical research in Japan before completing her TCM studies in Canada and China.
As a passionate educator, Dr. Carr has served on the editorial advisory boards of Alive magazine and Integrative Practitioner. She has also presented for the David Suzuki Foundation, the University of British Columbia, and Fraser Health.
In January 2025, Singing Dragon published her book, Modern Chinese Medicine Food Cures: A Personalized Approach to Nutrition.
