We're pleased to share an update on ATCMA's recent productive meeting with the Ministry of Health regarding Traditional Chinese Medicine regulations and scope of practice developments in British Columbia.
Collaborative Meeting
ATCMA’s President, Dr. Chris Vallee, and Executive Director, Dr. Melissa Carr, recently met with Ministry of Health representatives to discuss important updates to our TCM regulations and scope of practice. We're encouraged to report that the overall tone of this meeting was positive, demonstrating the Ministry's commitment to working collaboratively with our profession and with the ATCMA.
Clear Direction from Minister Josie Osborne
The Ministry of Health confirmed they have received direct guidance from the Honourable Minister of Health, Josie Osborne, to advance work on TCM regulations with a primary focus on ensuring clarity in implementation. This ministerial direction underscores the government's recognition of the importance of our profession and their commitment to developing solutions that are both robust and clear.
Important Clarification
We want to provide absolute clarity on a critical point that both ATCMA and the Ministry of Health emphasized during our discussions:
The changes in restricted activities do NOT and will NOT reflect any deregulation of prescribing Chinese herbal formulas.
This is a fundamental aspect of TCM practice and remains authorized within the profession’s scope of practice. The current regulatory review process is focused on strengthening regulations for clarity, not removing or weakening existing practice rights.
Reassurance for Our Professional Community
TCM professionals can continue to practice without concern, and the public can continue to rest assured that Chinese herbal prescribing is safe and public protection is at the forefront of not just our regulatory college and the government, but also of TCM professionals. The regulatory adjustments being discussed are designed to:
- Enhance clarity in practice guidelines
- Strengthen existing regulations
- Improve understanding for both practitioners and the public
- Maintain all current practice rights and privileges
These changes represent refinement and clarification, not restriction or reduction of our professional capabilities.
Continued Advocacy for Scope of Practice Modernization
ATCMA continues to actively advocate for the modernization of our scope of practice, an initiative our profession has been pursuing for more than a decade. This ongoing effort becomes increasingly relevant as we observe that numerous other healthcare professions have recently received expansions in their scope of practice.
Our modernization goals Include expanding practice capabilities to reflect current TCM education and competencies so we can align our scope with modern healthcare needs and patient expectations. We are pushing to ensure parity with other healthcare professions in terms of practice evolution.
Looking Forward
ATCMA remains committed to working closely with the Ministry of Health as these important regulatory refinements move forward. Our advocacy efforts will continue to focus on:
- Ensuring clarity and strength in all regulatory frameworks
- Protecting and expanding TCM practice rights
- Advancing scope of practice modernization
- Maintaining open dialogue with government representatives
- Keeping our members informed throughout the process
Staying Connected
We will continue to provide regular updates as discussions with the Ministry of Health progress. Our commitment remains unwavering: to advocate effectively for our profession while ensuring that TCM practitioners can continue providing excellent patient care with confidence and clarity.
The collaborative spirit demonstrated in our recent meeting gives us great optimism for continued positive developments that will benefit both our professional community and the patients we serve.
